Employers Partner of the Year 2019

Employer Partner of the Year was Stevens Rowsell, an engineering company based in St Leonards-on-Sea which has offered several opportunities to young people in recent months, including new apprentice Ben Williams, aged 18, from Hastings.

Ben was previously unemployed and has now started work as an estimator after coaching and careers advice from training provider Best Practice People.

Employer Case study

The Apple Tree, Crawley

The Apple Tree is a local community based public house serving drinks as well as food. They host many events including fund raising evenings for local causes.

The owner, Jan, was the only personal licence holder within the business. The cost of putting staff through their own training was prohibitive. This caused some challenges as I need to be on the premises the whole time we are open. Long days!

We were unaware of funding available to solve this problem until approached by Best Practice People explaining the opportunity to access provision from European Social Fund.

We heard about the provision through a representative of Best Practice People. We discussed the needs of the business and how obtaining personal licences for the staff would benefit both the business and myself to allow me to roster more efficiently and to be away from the premises at my own free will.

We also agreed the staff would benefit and feel valued by receiving the opportunity to undertake training and obtain their personal licences. This applies to the time they work here but also for the future when they move on to new employers being able to take on more responsibilities.

In all we trained four staff, including updating my own skills. They also achieved qualification in;

  • Equality & Diversity

  • British Values

  • Business & Enterprise

  • Managing Money

  • Personal Licence

The sessions were vibrant and the staff felt a real sense of achievement. One of the participants had never achieved a formal qualification, so this was a real boost.
